Aquarium managers needed a reliable way to continuously monitor ozone concentrations around generation equipment and detect potentially unsafe levels that could put personnel at risk.

For aquarium managers, however, its use also requires addressing an important operational challenge: managing the health and safety risks associated with ozone generation.
As a highly unstable and reactive gas, ozone cannot be stored on site. When needed for disinfection, it must be generated using an ozone generator and immediately injected into the water, creating the potential for leaks and occupational exposure around generation equipment.
Ozone is toxic to humans and can cause serious health effects if not carefully controlled. While it is an effective disinfectant for aquarium water, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) highlights that the high concentrations of ozone required to provide effective sterilization are unsafe for humans. Exposure to leaking ozone can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and irritation of the airways. It can also exacerbate chronic conditions such as asthma, while long-term exposure can cause permanent lung damage.
Detecting a potential leak can also be challenging. Although ozone has a distinct, sharp odor frequently compared with strong bleach or cleaning chemicals, the human sense of smell can quickly become desensitized to it. As a result, odor alone cannot provide a reliable warning when elevated ozone concentrations are present.
Major regulatory bodies recognize the health risks associated with workplace ozone exposure and have established occupational exposure limits. In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) establishes an exposure limit of less than 0.2 ppm over a 15-minute reference period. In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) establishes a permissible exposure limit of 0.1 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average.
While these exposure limits differ, both organizations require employers to manage workplace ozone exposure within established limits. Given these risks and workplace exposure requirements, aquarium managers began evaluating monitoring solutions capable of continuously tracking ozone concentrations around generation equipment and helping identify potentially unsafe conditions.
