Herausforderung

Aquarium managers needed a reliable way to continuously monitor ozone concentrations around generation equipment and detect potentially unsafe levels that could put personnel at risk.

Die Lösung

GasSens F12D Toxic Gas Detector

Ergebnisse

Continuous ozone monitoring provides prompt detection of elevated gas levels, helping reduce occupational exposure risks, protect personnel and support regulatory compliance.

Maintaining carefully controlled water conditions is a critical part of aquarium operations, particularly in large-scale marine reef installations where aquatic life depends on a stable and carefully managed environment. Water quality directly influences the health of marine species, making effective treatment processes essential to sustaining conditions that closely replicate natural habitats within aquatic life support systems (LSS).

At a large aquarium in the Middle East, ozone (O₃) dosing plays an important role in achieving these objectives by supporting water quality, cleaning and sanitization. Ozone supports several key water management functions:

  • Water Clarity & Purification: Ozone oxidizes dissolved organic compounds that can cause yellow or cloudy water, improving aquarium clarity and light penetration.
  • Disinfection: As a powerful disinfectant, ozone helps control bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites to support water quality and aquatic health.
  • Odor Control: Dosing aquarium water with ozone helps remove unpleasant odors and improve the surrounding environment for personnel.
  • No Toxic Residue: Ozone breaks down into oxygen after oxidizing contaminants, leaving no toxic residue that could be harmful to aquatic life.
  • Reduced Maintenance: Regular ozone dosing helps control organic waste, reducing water changes needed to maintain healthy aquarium conditions.

These capabilities make ozone an effective tool for maintaining stable aquatic environments and supporting the health of marine life. For aquarium managers, however, its use also requires addressing an important operational challenge: managing the health and safety risks associated with ozone generation.

Managing Ozone Exposure in Aquarium Operations

As a highly unstable and reactive gas, ozone cannot be stored on site. When needed for disinfection, it must be generated using an ozone generator and immediately injected into the water, creating the potential for leaks and occupational exposure around generation equipment.

Ozone is toxic to humans and can cause serious health effects if not carefully controlled. While it is an effective disinfectant for aquarium water, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) highlights that the high concentrations of ozone required to provide effective sterilization are unsafe for humans. Exposure to leaking ozone can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath and irritation of the airways. It can also exacerbate chronic conditions such as asthma, while long-term exposure can cause permanent lung damage.

Detecting a potential leak can also be challenging. Although ozone has a distinct, sharp odor frequently compared with strong bleach or cleaning chemicals, the human sense of smell can quickly become desensitized to it. As a result, odor alone cannot provide a reliable warning when elevated ozone concentrations are present.

Major regulatory bodies recognize the health risks associated with workplace ozone exposure and have established occupational exposure limits. In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) establishes an exposure limit of less than 0.2 ppm over a 15-minute reference period. In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) establishes a permissible exposure limit of 0.1 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average.

While these exposure limits differ, both organizations require employers to manage workplace ozone exposure within established limits. Given these risks and workplace exposure requirements, aquarium managers began evaluating monitoring solutions capable of continuously tracking ozone concentrations around generation equipment and helping identify potentially unsafe conditions.

Detecting Ozone Leaks Around Generation Equipment

After evaluating available solutions, aquarium managers selected the GasSens F12D Toxic Gas Detector from the BlueEdge® by Badger Meter portfolio to continuously monitor ozone concentrations around the facility's generation equipment. Several factors influenced this decision. The F12D combines smart, hot-swappable sensor technology with flexible installation configurations and automated sensor testing. Designed for fixed-mount toxic gas monitoring applications, the system can measure more than 60 gases and offers multiple configuration options to support different facility requirements.

For the aquarium, the ability to remotely position the sensor was particularly important. Because ozone is a dense gas, leaks within enclosed spaces can sink and accumulate near the ground. The F12D remote sensor option enabled managers to position the sensor at ground level, supporting prompt detection of leaking ozone and notification of potentially unsafe conditions to help reduce the risk of personnel overexposure.

Beyond ozone detection performance, aquarium managers also wanted a monitoring solution that could minimize routine maintenance requirements while maintaining confidence in system operation. The F12D features the AutoTest function, which uses self-generated gas to perform daily response checks and automatically verify sensor operation.

For the management team, automated sensor testing removes the need for manual bump tests, helping reduce routine maintenance requirements while providing ongoing confirmation that sensors remain operational and ready to detect potential ozone leaks.

Together, remote sensor placement and automated testing provide the facility with a monitoring solution that supports personnel safety, reduces routine maintenance demands and improves operational efficiency.

Supporting Safer Aquarium Operations

Ozone remains an important part of the aquarium’s water management strategy, supporting the carefully controlled conditions needed for marine life. Continuous gas monitoring allows the management team to maintain these benefits while taking a more proactive approach to the occupational risks associated with on-site ozone generation.

With the GasSens F12D Toxic Gas Detector in place, facility managers have continuous visibility into ozone concentrations around generation equipment and can receive prompt notification of potentially unsafe conditions. Remote sensor placement supports detection where leaking ozone may accumulate, while automated daily response checks reduce manual maintenance and provide greater confidence in sensor readiness.

Together, these capabilities help the aquarium balance effective water treatment with personnel safety, regulatory compliance and efficient facility operations.
